Shanghai Jiahua Kindergarten

Consciousness reflects the objective existence and forms aesthetic concepts. Our environment and the things we interact with are filled with expressions of curves, from swirling galaxies and spherical celestial bodies to winding rivers and grand mountain ranges. When early humans drew energy and knowledge from nature, pictographs emerged, followed by geometry, music, sculpture, philosophy, architecture, and more. As a result, the concept of curves, both abstract and concrete, is interwoven throughout every corner of the world, creating a psychological aesthetic of curves. Even today, this aesthetic continues to evolve and expand.

Kindergarten Design

In the realm of spatial design, the psychological aesthetics of curves imbue architectural spaces with a broad and sensory meaning of naturalness, inclusivity, warmth, softness, fluidity, harmony, subtlety, and comfort. Simultaneously, it bestows artistic vitality on these spaces, introducing an element of conflict.

In this project, the kindergarten aims to create an artistic and open space for children, striving for a reconstruction of existing rules and a release of children's natural tendencies. As a result, a few curves flow from the designer's pen, weaving and intertwining.

When we shift our thoughts from the moving classical music and delicate oil painting lines to the project's floor plan, we contemplate how to provide a suitable and vibrant response.

Kindergarten Design

In terms of structure, the original straight spaces led to small public areas and uninteresting activity rooms and corridors. Therefore, we reconfigured the space with curves to more logically allocate areas based on spatial requirements. The new layout is full of vitality. With an increased public area, we divided it into fun corners, reading areas, LEGO areas, and more, enriching the types of free activities available to children. The activity rooms are now lively and engaging due to the changing curves.

Starting with the functional changes in the structure, the curve's touch dances and extends into the space, painting on blank walls and composing the poetry of life on the ground. The light and flowing melodies interweave the harmonious and inclusive relationships between children, teachers, and the environment.

Kindergarten Design

The story begins with several parallel curved light strips on the arch, creating a space-time tunnel. Reality and dreams gaze at each other across it. The emerging starry light fixtures and the laughter that gradually approaches adorn this small reception space. However, children do not always take the "prepared" space-time tunnel. They prefer to crawl into the kindergarten through the adjacent "secret passage," with the exit hidden...

Kindergarten Design

When the river-like lights on the ceiling sweep through the long and narrow corridor like moonlight, the boundary of space dissolves endlessly here. The walls melt downward, turning into milky white waves, covered in children's colorful candies. In every morning, sweet mist rises, making the children feel dizzy as they get lost in the forest.

Kindergarten Design

As you walk, the ground beneath your feet also ripples, as if the water's surface, with ripples pushing away in circles. The golden ginkgo leaves, the soft clouds, and the curious little faces of children are reflected in these ripples. Who can resist the adorable mirrors, much like cat pawprints?

Kindergarten Design

Upon reaching this point, the curve heads toward a symphony of architecture, art, and illusion. It is clearly still but flows gently, silently interpreting the beauty of opposites. For children, the existence of the stainless steel ceiling with water ripple patterns is a "mystery," and its back is a place for imaginative attempts to conquer. Even as we grow up, we are reluctant to deconstruct those "mysteries," or else our entire childhood would pale.

Kindergarten Design

The reading corner, opposite to the fun corner, is also an area added based on the curved structure. Visually, it leans more towards softness and tranquility. The sky and sea are both constructed with curves, creating a layered and progressive effect. The flow of each line has its unique attitude and beauty, rhythmic and harmonious as paper pages turn, creating a harmonious natural panorama.

Finally, when the spaces are interconnected, every detail crafted by curves is illuminated together, creating a distinctive emotional atmosphere—natural, inclusive, warm, soft, fluid, harmonious, subtle, comforting...
